Mini Interview with Kieren Hutchison

Kieren Hutchison talks about the life of privilege his character, Jake, leads in Monarch Cove.

Kieren: He’s very rich. His family owns a bunch of hotels. And, I guess, at the beginning of the series he’s got a big problem, where he’s engaged to be married to one girl but then, he basically meets the love of his life, Bianca. So, I guess, he’s got to work out what he’s gonna do there.

Interviewer: A rich man with problems.

Kieren: A rich man with big problems, right. (laughing)

Interviewer: And why will viewers like your character?

Kieren: How am I like my character?

Interviewer: No. Why will viewers like your character?

Kieren:  I think, from what I can tell, he’s a very… he’s a stand-up guy. He’s trying to do the right thing. He’s found himself kind of locked in this situation with family commitments, and things like that. But he’s also trying to follow his heart, so, you know, there’s a lot to identify with, I think.

What Is On Screen Chemistry?

Kieren Hutchison: I don't know. On screen chemistry... I think a lot of it to me seems to be in the eye of the beholder, you know. People will watch people on screen and go: 'great chemistry'.

I think, when you're one of those actors in the scene, it's kind of difficult to... I don't think you should be thinking about it, if you know what I mean. It's something that's kind of there or it isn't. If you're just relaxing and are open to the other actor then hopefully something happens.

It's kind of like this magic thing. That's why everybody is talking about it like chemistry or no chemistry. But for me it's kind of for other people to judge. I'm not gonna sit there and judge whether I have great chemistry with somebody, you know. It's playfulness, it's openness, playing the scene and everything. Cross your fingers.

Have you ever had a crush on a co-star?
Kieren: A co-star? In the past. I'm married right now, so no, not anymore (laughs). But before I was married, absolutely. Sure. It's all fun.
