ONE TREE HILL I EPISODES
2.12 BETWEEN ORDER AND RANDOMNESS

FULL EPISODE SYNOPSIS (spoiler!)

It's 8:30 in the morning. Lucas wakes up to the radio blaring. His mother is busy moving all of his belongings from his room. She wants him to take the heart test, but he is determined not to do it. So Karen is set on making his life as uncomfortable as possible.

Even though Brooke hasn't any previous job experience, she gets a job at Carl's Crab Shack. She has to dress up in a crab costume and stand outside the restaurant, calling out the specials. Brooke feels quite silly. The big shock comes when they get paid only 15 Dollars for six hours of work. Brooke is outraged.

Lucas asks Dan about Jules. Dan tells Lucas that Keith slept with Deb and that this is his revenge. But allegedly he told Jules to leave town after coming to his senses. Lucas does not believe it and he does not trust Dan.

Andy comes over to stay with Karen for about a week because his floors are being done. Lucas sees him arrive and tells Andy, if he is looking for a stereo, play station or clean underwear, he should check the garage. Andy takes it in stride, while Karen is not impressed.

Dan plans to invite Keith and Jules over to dinner. Deb is unsure if that is not another opportunity for Dan to rip Keith apart. Dan swears it isn't. When Jules hears about the invitation from Keith she is unhappy.

Lucas tells his troubles about Dan's accusation and Jules's lies to Anna. She's his only friend at the moment. Anna then tells Lucas in turn that she kissed Peyton. Anna and Lucas are really good friends now who can confide in each other.

Felix visits Brooke at her job. She is outraged when she finds out that according to Carl she is not entitled to a break.

Lucas goes to Keith to find out if Dan told him the truth about Keith and Deb. Lucas is upset when Keith admits it and very worried when he hears that Keith is taking his relationship with Jules very serious.

Later, Andy visits Lucas in his room and remarks on its bareness. He brought Lucas something to eat. Andy talks to Lucas about not taking the test and that he shouldn't be too hard on his mom, who is only worried about her son.

Nathan visits Haley at the café and tells her about his past with Taylor. Haley is shocked and upset. But Nathan felt she should hear it from him rather than from Taylor. When Haley comes home she and Taylor have an argument.

Keith visits Lucas and suggests that they take the heart test together. Keith is as much at risk as Lucas and he put off the test because he was scared. Keith now decided to take the test for Jules, to give her peace of mind and he advises Lucas to do the same for his mom.

Haley looks up Chris's tour blog on the internet. It's not so much him that she misses, she is jealous of Chris's music, his freedom to pursue his dream and she is quite confused by her feelings. She gets to talk to Taylor about it. Taylor is sure that Haley will do the right thing, as she always does.

Keith and Jules have dinner with Dan and Deb. Dan is really awful, quizzing Jules all night long and dropping hints, making everybody feel uncomfortable. After dinner Dan and Jules get to be alone for a moment. Jules tells Dan she wants out but it's too late. Dan also tells her to stay away from Lucas, who's the only other person to know of their plot.

Anna brings up the heart test with Lucas as well, when they meet again in the evening. Karen had tracked her down in her desperation to change her son's mind. Lucas goes to visit Keith later that evening. He's the first to find out that Keith proposed to Jules and that she said yes. Lucas has a bad feeling about this.

Brooke is fed up with her lousy working conditions. She gets some good ideas from Felix how to take on Carl. The next day she puts the demands of the "crab girls" to Carl. When he threatens to fire them all, she presents him with boards that tell the customers that his fresh crabs are not that fresh. Carl gives in.

Keith and Lucas go to take the test together. Lucas cautions his uncle, that he doesn't really know Jules, but Keith is determined. Keith also asks Lucas to be his best man at the wedding. Lucas agrees, though without enthusiasm.

Haley and Nathan take a romantic walk by the river. Meanwhile Taylor intercepts an instant message from Chris to Haley. She writes back that she cannot talk to him anymore, as she is in love with Nathan and signs it Haley.

When Lucas comes home he finds his mother putting his things back into his room, having realised that this will not make him change is mind. She is relieved when he tells her that he took the test after all and gives him a tearful hug.

Dan talks to Lucas about Jules. He says he doesn't want Keith to find out. Lucas asks what he wants. Dan says, he's sure they can work something out.

Commentary to this scene from creator Mark Schwahn: Sometimes due to running length we have to make choices which journeys we are going to take from week to week, and a lot of times the kids' journeys will win out because we are more invested in those journeys. A lot of times the parents' stories are about parenting the kids, so this was a really great arch between Moira Kelly's character of Karen and Kieren Hutchison's Andy. But I had to lift it due to running length. Again, really worthy work being done by two great actors just not enough time to tell their tale.

SCENE
Andy: You know; before, what I said about Lucas, you know, I never had kids; what do I know.
Karen: A lot! You were right. I need to start giving Lucas his space, he's practically an adult now. Ah, I always thought it was gonna get easier as he got older but it's harder. 'Cause now the trick is letting go.
Andy: Well, it's a good thing I'm here to help share the burden, isn't it?
